Deb, Walt & Chico

Lynn's sister, brother-in-law and their chihuahua arrived last Saturday for a long awaited visit and we had a very fine time!  But no body had more fun than the dogs, as Tinkerbell and Chico played their little hearts out every day.

They arrived a little earlier than expected, while Lynn was working at the beach.

No visit with us is complete without a trip to Jubilee! on Sunday morning.  And it was even nicer to have the 4 leggeds with us.

A pup can only have so much fun before needing a siesta.  Chico is zonked, for sure!

These proud ladies were participants in the go topless rally in downtown Asheville on that Sunday.  What a great little city we live in!

This lady at Greenman Brewery just couldn't resist Tinkerbell's charms.  As for Tinker, she isn't so sure.

It's always fun to take first-time visitors up Davidson River to see Sliding Rock and Looking Glass Falls, above.  The beauty of this place never ceases to astound me.  Oh yeah!  Thanks for coming to see us, Deb & Walt.  It was good to see you and have you here.

The Greenman

This post is a bit more risque than most so I'm putting this first to warn off my grand kids, at least for a while.  It won't be that long until all of them are teenagers so they can wait 'til then.

Last Thursday we headed to the Asheville Tourist baseball game and decided to stop at our favorite watering hole, Greenman Brewery, to sip some ESB before the game.  Molly the barmaid lightened our mood with her shades, smile and dancing to some good music while she poured.  Then there are the refrigerator magnets behind the bar, a good source of sayings and humor.  Here's a sample.

No explanation needed.

Hmmm...

Of course I've never said this before.  Yeah, right.

For the person who has almost everything.  And finally, my fav of the bunch on this visit!

Hope you enjoyed a smile or two and see ya real soon!

Enka High Reunion Redux

Here are a few pics that didn't make the first post.  Enjoy!

The flip side of Pat Gosnell Freeman and Brenda Jones O'Kelly from the first post.  They were two of our cheerleaders way back when.

Did Pat just realize that I'm wearing the same necktie as Christian Grey from the "50 Shades..." trilogy?  No, I don't think so.  If she did, she didn't mention it.  Oh well...

Diane and Chokey Stines seemed to enjoy the evening very much.  He told a terrific tale at the social the next day.  Sorry I didn't get a picture of his punchline.

Some of the lovely ladies who attended the Sweet and Salty Social on Sunday.  That's Lynn Gant trying to hide on the back row.

Just a good shot of Marcia Crook Howell, Fred Kirkpatrick and Patsy Furness.

David:  "He's wearing what?!"
Madeline:"Oh yeah!"

Enka High Reunion '12

It dawned on me while preparing to write about this that our program said "ENKA JETS Class of 1965 47th Class Reunion".  Actually, it was our 10th time getting together since we graduated and I realized that I'm still struggling with the English language!  And, this one included the classes of '64 and '66 as well as a golf outing, both new additions for this wonderful event.

Charlie G., Myra W.G., Phil T., Terry F., Randy T.

Our host for golf and the evening dinner/dance was classmate Gary Warren, the General Manager at the Country Club of Asheville.  Thanks again, Gary! We are very fortunate that he works there and that he's generous enough to invite us to celebrate this special occasion at such a fine venue.  The course and the weather were both beautiful and far exceeded my golf play.  Lynn and I enjoyed the company of David and Madeline Rickman as well as the fine folks pictured above.

Classmate Jimmy Bailey inspired us all during the cocktail hour with his splendid piano play.  Somehow I didn't know that he could play like that, though many of my classmates knew.  I'm glad they did and even gladder that he played for us.  Thanks Jimmy!

A very special guest for our evening was Coach Bill MacElrath.  Although I was never coached by him or in any of his classes, he had a fine reputation as being very good at both.  He later became principal of Enka High.

The dinner was excellent (again), with beef, shrimp, chicken cordon blue, grilled vegetables and a nicely spicy purple slaw that was fantastic.  Then there was desert...a chocolate creation that made me moan out loud!

As is always the case at these gatherings, there were so many people and so little time.  So I spent a little time with a lot of people, and not as much as I wanted to with any of them.

Charlie Glazener, class of '66, produced a wonderful video program which brought many laughs and some tears to more than a few eyes.  Thanks, Charlie, for a job very well done!  He credits me with steering him toward Air Force ROTC when we were at UNC.  He became a career officer and a pilot.

My two closest friends from EHS were there, David Rickman and George Holcomb.  We had more good times together than I can count and also shared out heartaches with each other.  Thanks for being there, my friends, both then and now.  They are still two of the finest men I've ever known.

And then there were the women.  I got more hugs and kisses than I have in a very long time and enjoyed each and every one.  Little Feat sang a song entitled Old Folks Boogie which said something like you know that you're over the hill when your mind makes a promise that your body can't fill.  Well that was true of me and dancing that night.  I made far more promises than even my younger body could have fulfilled.    I did manage to dance a few before the evening ended and enjoyed them immensely.

Early in the evening we honored our classmates who have passed on.  Wayne Caldwell read the names from '65 and the list was longer than two years ago.  I know that's to be expected, but I started to wonder whose names would be read next time.  We're all standing in that line and moving toward the front.  That's one reason I come to these.  I want to see folks while I can.  Then there's the reality that my time may come before the next one and my name will be read.  If it does, know that I lived this life to the fullest and loved it.  I  have no regrets.  Bon voyage, my friends!  Oh yeah!

A Satchel's Farewell

The other day I discovered that my travel companion for many years, the Land's End canvas satchel seen above, had a very bad case of mildew as well as a few holes from many, many miles traveled.  So, reluctantly, I emptied it then bid it a fond farewell.  It was a treasured gift from daughter Barbara and my second of its' kind.

Together we went to London, the Netherlands, St. Petersburg, Russia, Canada, San Francisco, Maine and Florida.  On several occasions it served as a pillow as I stretched out on the floor of an airport.  At other times it gave me breathing room in an over crowded elevator.

It was my facilitator's tool kit, carrying the things I needed to try and work some magic among groups of diverse people seeking consensus.  It carried pens, koosh balls, ear plugs, magic markers in many colors, masking tape, tissues, Excedrin PM, mouth wash, hand lotion, business cards, keys, calculator, file folders and my trusty notebook.  But most important, it carried a lot of good memories of people, places and events that changed my life, and the lives of many others, hopefully for the better.   Bon voyage!
